Politics in the Pub - Is Jailing Failing?

What do we want from our criminal justice system? 

The obvious answer is “justice” but what does that look like? 

We know jailing is not a deterrent or reformative because the imprisonment rate has doubled under governments of both persuasions over the last thirty years and 61% of prisoners have been there before. 

Who are the people in prison and why are they there? 

What could be done to prevent crime and reoffending, make our communities safer and to support victims? 

Why do we spend, as a nation, $6.3 billion per year on a system which fails victims and disadvantaged people, and doesn’t address the causes of crime? 

Join us at Politics in the Pub –  Is Jailing Failing? to recognise the problems but, more importantly, identify and push for solutions.
